Even Sinners Have Souls Too

Even Sinners Have Souls Too
Introduction by National Best selling author, K’Wan, with four stories by Darrell King and Essence Magazine bestselling authors, Michel Moore, Tysha and Victor L. Martin.

Meet author and editor E.N. Joy
E.N. Joy is the author of Me, Myself and Him, which was her debut work into the Christian Fiction genre. Formerly a secular author writing under the names Joylynn M. Jossel and JOY, this author has fully dedicated her writing to Christ. She is currently working on the “New Day Divas” series as well as completing the “Sinners Series” project.

Intimate Conversation with Ella Curry of EDC Creations

Ella: Introduce us to the book, Even Sinners Have Souls TOO.
E.N. Joy: Even Sinners Have Souls TOO is book two from the “Sinners Series”. As editor and publisher of this project, it was my goal to share with the reading audience well written and compelling stories by some of the industry’s most respected and authority authors in the Urban Lit genre.

Ella: Why was it important to produce this work today?
E.N. Joy: Books and authors of books that are categorized as urban, erotic, street, ghetto, gangster, Hip-Hop fiction, or whatever else they are being labeled, are taking hard hits in the industry, especially by these so-called “literary writers”. Why is it that whenever black people bring the life they live front and center and turn it into art, society goes crazy? Are we that afraid and offended of the ghetto and the projects to the point where we ridicule those who talk about it? Is growing up in the hood that taboo?

E.N. Joy: Despite popular belief, everything that comes from the ghetto isn’t all bad. There are some good products of the ghetto. It produces great individuals, some even authors. But because of the type of genre that these authors choose to pen, they are stigmatized and rumored unable to create literature without glorifying a trigger happy, drug dealing thug, or a burgundy micro braid wearing, gum poppin’, promiscuous gold digger, or a television stealing crack head (in addition to at least two curse words per paragraph).

Ella: Will this book change how Urban Lit is protrayed as a industry?
E.N. Joy: There is a huge misconception that authors who write Urban Lit, referred to as Street Lit by many, can’t pen a decent story that doesn’t include foul language and explicit sex scenes. These authors are even often accused of glorifying street life. The “Sinners Series” forces critics and skeptics alike to take a different stand when they read the storylines contained in the “Sinners Series.”

Ella: What are some unique aspects of the Sinners Series?
E.N. Joy: Even Sinners Have Souls Too offers more of Urban Lit’s finest take a walk on the other side in book two, Even Sinners Have Souls Too, of the three book Sinners Series. Darrell King and Essence Best-Selling authors, Victor L. Martin, Tysha and Michel Moore bring you four smashing tales, but not before National Best-Selling author, K’Wan, hits you with the powerful introduction, “Oh Sinner Man.”

E.N. Joy: The authors bring to life the same raw and gritty characters found in some of their other works. There are the dope boys, the hood rats, the promiscuity, homosexuality, the gang bangers, abuse, drugs, alcohol, etc…; all the things that exist in real life on the streets. But what makes these tales so phenomenal and unique is that in the midst of it all, just like in real life on the streets, there is also, God, prayer, and sometimes a praying grandmother. What pleased me the most about each and every story is that they never, for one moment, lost their authenticity. The authors still walked away from this project with their street credit, so to speak.

Ella: What impact with the Sinners Series have on the community?
E.N. Joy: The “Sinners Series” is going to shatter the myth about urban and street literature and its authors once and for all. This project is not so that authors have to defend their work, or even compromise it.

The purpose is to show that they are multi-talented with a natural gift to pen what flows through their spirit and not just what’s selling, and at the same time to add a creative twist on their already original writing styles. In doing so, we pray that readers will be touched and moved by every single character; every single story…that they won’t be the same person as they were before reading these works.

Pat G’Orge-Walker delivers a wickedly funny, uplifting novel of love and betrayal…good karma and bad karma…sin and redemption

Chyna and her sister Janelle are always moments away from a catfight. They love each other, but Janelle has never forgiven her sister for swiping her first love, Cordell. That was ages ago, and now Chyna is showing off as the First Lady of New Hope Assembly, a church that’s caught between the old ways of Holiness and new ways of serving its community. New Hope’s leader, Reverend Grayson Young, is also caught…in the infamous Sweet Bush lounge, an establishment well-known for adult pleasures.

With the church congregation running wild in the aftermath of her husband’s scandalous behavior, Chyna turns to her sister Janelle for guidance. But if Chyna thinks she’s getting sympathy from Janelle, she’d better think again, because Janelle’s got her own crisis. And when Cordell suddenly comes back into the sisters’ lives, what follows are squabbling, chaos, and surprises that show just how hard the road to salvation really is…

“Author Pat G’Orge-Walker is a comic genius! She’s woven a brilliant netting of both comical and loving characters that will cause readers to ’spill their guts’ with ‘out loud’ laughter.”

One Night with You by Francis Ray New York Times bestselling author Francis Ray continues her captivating series about the Grayson family and their circle of friends with One Night With You, as two people with no plans for romance find themselves blindsided by desire…

Latest Release: One Night with You
November 03, 2009
Series: Grayson Friends Series
ISBN-13: 9780312365066; ISBN-10: 0312365063

When you first started writing, did you think you would ever write as many books as you have and have such a loyal following? Did you know this would become a “business venture” for you?
Francis: I had no idea I would write this many book or have such a loyal following when I started writing. I simply keep trying to write the best book possible, and was blessed to find an editor who kept buying my books. Yes, I always knew that you had to take the business side of writing seriously to stay in this industry for years. It requires a great business head for book promotions and even more professionalism to handle the contracts.

What has been the best and the worst experience you’ve had on your literary journey?
Francis: The best is after I sold my first book, I’ve never had a book that was rejected. The worst was walking away from one publisher and unsure if I’d find another publishing house that wanted my books. Scary. Scary.

How long does it take you to write a novel?
Francis: The time frame differs. I wrote ONE NIGHT WITH YOU, my November 03, release in 3 months. IT HAD TO BE YOU, Book #4 in the Grayson Friends series, and the last book I wrote took six weeks.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Francis: No, the writing bug didn’t hit me until I read SHANNA by Katherine Woodewiss. By her third book I knew I wanted to write similar books. The difference was I wanted people of color to take center stage.

How did you get started writing?
Francis: I joined my local chapter of Romance Writers of America, North Texas Romance Writers of America. I’m proud to say I won the first service award, The Yellow Rose. The friendships and mentors were invaluable. I can honestly say that without them I would not be published now.

Do you remember the very first story you ever wrote? What age were you when you wrote it? Was it romance even then?
Francis: I had no idea I wanted to write until Woodewiss’ third book. The first story I wrote was Wife For Hire for Black Romance. I was an adult.

Since romance novels have a pretty set formula that they follow, how difficult do you find it to continue to write stories that will make loyal romance readers overlook that aspect of the book?
Francis: The only set formula I can see is that hero and heroine are at odds, but by the end of the story they’re in love and the writer has tested that love so the reader knows that whatever happens in their lives their love is strong enough to endure. I’d say the possibilities are endless. My plotting skills, not the parameters, is the challenge I face.

Several romance authors have ventured into writing in other genres such as mystery, etc. Have you ever considered taking that step also?
Francis: I wanted to write Christian fiction and was blessed to have been given that opportunity when Harlequin publishes, HOW SWEET THE SOUND. I’ve thought of writing young adult but I haven’t gotten past three pages.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Francis: The actual writing is probably my favorite part. Starting a new book is always scary. I plot slow. And despite my best intention, I always have loads of research on my character’s profession, the setting, even the cars they drive..

What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Francis: I guess the hardest part of writing is plotting. If I can’t see it, no matter how wonderful the story might be, I can’t write it.

What challenges have you faced in your literary journey? How did you overcome them?
Francis: Probably the biggest challenge in my literary journey was finding a publisher who wanted to publish African-American romances. Then, when I did find a publisher, distribution was spotty at best. If the book did make it to an outlet, the challenge was getting readers not to think the book was badly written because it was written by an African-American. I overcame the challenge by continuing to write and believing that I had a story to tell that people wanted to read.

What are your best and worst experiences as a writer?
Francis: The best is after I sold my first book I have never had a book that was rejected. The worst was walking away from one publisher and unsure if I’d find another publishing house that wanted my books. Scary. Scary.

What is the one thing that has surprised you the most during your writing career?
Francis: That people think all published authors are wealthy.

What authors influence your work?
Francis: Katherine Woodewiss, Elizabeth Lowell, Amanda Quick, and Nora Roberts.

What are you currently working on?
Francis: I’m working on BECAUSE OF YOU, Book # 6 in the Grayson Friends series.

Tragedy and Triumph of the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson

LorettaFaithHarrisThe Tragedy and Triumph of the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson hailed “King of Pop” in the spotlight since the tender age of five; the world watched on as he lived a life of stardom and glamour as well as uphill battles and undoubtedly inside struggles. This Pop Icon crafted a legacy of his own with over the top record breaking hits, a fan base surpassing that of his predecessors, and a self proclaimed promise that he would be the greatest that ever lived. So what finally occurred on his journey through life that caused his dreams to be short lived? No matter what we experience in life whether exhilarating or death defying, at the end of the day there is something that you have to face, yourSELF.

No one said it better than Michael, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I’m asking him to change his ways.”

This song and many more revealed the quest that Jackson and millions of human beings often embark upon in the middle of life’s journey. The objective, “Take a look at yourSELF.” Not your neighbor, your boss, your children, or your parents; we all have to come to a point in our lives’ when we take an introspective look at who we are and where we’re heading. Once that inspection is complete it is up to you to, “Make a change.”

Constantly under the media’s scrutiny, harassed and criticized for who he did not choose to be, Jackson’s journey through life was anything but stress free! “I’m going to end up just like Elvis Presley” was his fear, evidence enough that his demons were lurking, threatening to take him before his time should have been. Or was it? Was the life of Michael Jackson a sacrifice for you and I revealing the demons that we disguise and make believe don’t exist?

In my memoir, “The Journey Less Traveled: Choose to Turn Your Tragedy into Triumph” is an interactive journal called, Seven Steps to Developing a Conquerors Mentality. Step Six: Recognize Lesson Learned, teaches the reader how to take a tragic situation and embrace the opportunity to learn and grow from its occurrence. So the “King of Pop” is no longer with us but he left behind a lifetime of memories. In order to move forward from any tragedy we have to embrace its reality. Given the opportunity to live your life differently, think about what you now know and implement how you choose to live and grow.

I would like to highlight, “Lessons of Tragedy and Triumph” from the life and death of “The King of Pop” Michael Jackson:

1. Always find time to invest in our future generation

2. Never give a deaf ear to wisdom and advice from your loved ones and trusted friends

3. Every chance you get always tell others of your love and appreciation for them

4. When you see yourself going down the road to destruction humbly shift gears in an attempt to change your direction

5. Use your God given skills and talents to inspire the world

6. Money is power, but becomes a weakness when used to define who you are

7. Love your mother because you only get one and when time permits give her your all

8. Take the time to heal from past hurts and disappointments, because untreated wounds can lead to an infection

9. There is a call to greatness in each one of us, but it’s up to you to answer the call

10. Whenever life knocks you down, never stop dreaming and attempt to get back up

Life is our greatest teacher, but I believe that there are some destinations that could be avoided if we choose to learn from others mistakes. We don’t have to be strung up in a hospital room with an intravenous tube in our arm to understand that inhaling a mixture of chemical toxins can cause not only an altered state of being, but possibly lead to death. Unfortunately, everyone does not survive tragedy. But as a survivor of any tragic event, you are given a chance to take your experience, learn and grow, then help someone else.

Couldn’t put this down!, April 22, 2009

By

Throughout history classes during my school, I was told of slavery, and the contempt that remained towards African-Americans in the south long after slavery was abolished. I was told of segregation, and cruelty, and violence and murder. All of this struck a chord with me as wrong, but the books we were given to read were never instrumental in evoking the rage and sadness these events merited. The acts them selves, and the paragraphs they elicited in our history books sufficed in that regard. Then I read Martha Taylor’s In the Land of Cotton. I couldn’t put this book down for a second. I read it from start to finish with very little interruption. The book reads as a novel, and so is thoroughly captivating in that regard, but then I realized that it’s not fiction at all. It’s Ms. Taylor’s life story growing up during the Civil Rights Movement.

A wonderful mix of true life story and vivid history, June 5, 2009

By

Martha Taylor expertly weaves a lovely, emotional, story that first intrigues the reader who glances at the synopsis, (thinking it is a fiction story) and learns about a girl who discovers a primitive black family living in the forest. Thus the story holds the reader’s attention, who then comes to realize the truth throughout reading the entire story, and is hooked until the bittersweet ending. This is not only a tale about Martha and the lovely family that she discovers and her struggle to live through and understand racial inequality. There is also extensive highlights of current events in our nation in the mid 50’s to the 60’s included in the story such as continued racial prejudice, Martin Luther King’s strive towards equality and the Vietnam war. This story serves as an outstanding example of how America was still living with racial hatred and inequality, despite the positive efforts made to abolish slavery roughly a hundred years earlier.

Coming of age story in the South, May 27, 2009

By

eclecticreviewer  ( Iowa , USA )

In my parents’ and grandparents’ world skin color was an everyday reminder. In my world it had become the color of life. ~Martha Taylor
Martha Taylor’s autobiography chronicles her life in the South starting in 1956 through 1968. She is a lonely white girl in Tennessee who bonds with her black housekeeper, Lucy Boyd. When her father loses his job they have to let Lucy go and unbeknownst to her family, Martha follows Lucy to her home. Martha is taken in by Lucy’s family and meets Silas who is her first black playmate and the love of her life. Though Martha’s family moves to Texas , she keeps in touch with the Boyd family and especially, Silas, who goes to Chicago to get a better education and joins the service to fight in Vietnam . Ms. Taylor includes the history of the civil rights movement, the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King and the Vietnam War and how they affected her life.

Book Spotlight: The Reunion

Book Title: The Reunion
John R. Williams’ Website: www.theauthor.us

The Talking Points for Interviews
Point #1 –
The Reunion was written for anyone that has ever been in love or ever been nostalgic about the good old days. We all have stories from back in the day when we wore crazy hair styles, funny looking clothes and had high school sweethearts. My book will whisk you away and take you back in time to when life was simpler.

Point #2 – The Reunion also addresses the topic of change. It is all around us. Sometimes people change for the better other times that they change for the worst. Life’s circumstance, children, careers and hardship force us to dig deep into our core and find the very best in ourselves. Not everyone is up for the challenge. Some fail horribly at adulthood while others master the art or growing up. They get jobs, start families and tackle life. This dynamic has never ceased to surprise me. I am intrigued by the opportunity to illustrate this through my written work.

Point #3 - I am a big fan of eroticism, comedic and dramatic writing. To date there have only been a handful of authors that have been able to successfully mesh the three. My books will make you laugh, cry and quiver with an uncommon echelon of sexual uneasiness that can only be quenched by finishing the pages of my book. I want to create a total experience for my readers. In this age, sub par imagination and mediocre inventiveness is not rewarded. I intend to make an impact using this formula.

Point #4 – I was the product of a single parent home. I was born and raised in the city of Chicago . Growing up I faced hardship and learned how to survive the mean streets at an early age. On the converse side, I also discovered the beautiful elements of life. My edgy writing style stems from my life and experiences growing up in Chicago . I draw back to these experiences every time I write and use the good, the bad and the ugly to create a literary kaleidoscope that is as varied as my readers.

Storyline for The Reunion:

Sean Jiles was very popular at Kensor High School on Chicago’s Southside. His gifted writing ability, common sense and unwavering loyalty gained him lifelong friendships and a suitable following during his years there. After graduating, Sean moves to Dallas, Texas to attend college and pursue his dream of writing and directing stage plays.

While in college, Sean meets Eva Sparks, a sexy graduate student with attitude. They hit it off right away. Things start out fantastic but Sean soon realizes that Eva is more than he can handle. She is insecure, controlling, possessive and insanely jealous. She is a hot mess! In comparison, a far cry from Jade Brown, his high school sweetheart and true love from more than a decade ago.

Now a graduate, Sean has received $100,000 to produce his first major stage play. Between his career demands and problems with Eva, things are absolutely crazy! At the height of his dilemma, Sean receives an invitation to go back home and attend his 10-Year High School Class Reunion. This is great news!

Although Sean’s life is chaotic, he will attend. The reunion is sure to be the highlight of his summer. A vacation from Eva couldn’t have come at a better time. As exciting as it seems, Sean understands that the reunion will rehash tons of mixed emotions as well as force him to confront Eva and re-examine his failed love with Jade. Will Sean’s departure lead him to lost love or send his girlfriend Eva into one of the most frenzied fits of jealousy ever captured on paper? This book will not disappoint!

Words From The Cell

Words FromThe Cell

My current employment is behind the walls with those who the courts have found guilty of crimes and their retribution includes years of their lives. They watch the free world daily, through the media and the behavior of those they come in contact with throughout their years of incarceration. Communication with them becomes inevitable. There are those who once their sentence begins who are taking the time not only to re-evaluate themselves but the free world in which they hope some day to return. The following poem contains topics discussed freely by many of the men behind the wall……

Words From The Cell
I took the opportunity to read the paper this week
No, seriously I read it from sheet to sheet.
Figured I would see what was happening in my home town
Figured I’d take a media glance since I can’t go out,
ya’ know roam around.
I listen to the news from time to time,
hear some of the cellies talking about back in the hood crimes.
Didn’t need no names, faces of those that don’t communicate
That’s how it is when parole don’t even have your date.
I shocked myself ready everyday from front to back
I was even more surprised when I thought,
damn everybody must be on crack.
The system is in place to do it’s thing.
But the crimes of today, what the hell do they mean.
Never mind the murder, muggings and senseless killings,
smuggling, car theft and the usual drug dealings.
What’s up with the gang banging, initiations and turf wars?
What’s up with mothers and fathers offing each other, what is that for?
The kids that are being abused, used by adults,
they’ll never survive mentally, always remembering how it felt.
The politicians can’t shuffle the cards fast enough to give a raw deal,
boys they hired are pulling their plugs keeping it real.
Skeletons are falling out of closets, even those held most high.
What’s up with the teachers, priests and rabbi’s?
I’m reading this from a jail cell where I will probably live until I am old.
From this cell I can feel that the world has grown cold.
I cry at times when I think of the fate I chose in my youth, the decisions I made.
Losing my golden years in life is the price I paid.
But for you who are free, and choose what appears to be correct.
You live daily, trying to understand what man calls living perfect.
How perfect can it be with all your fears?
You check yourself and your neighbor daily, just as I do here.
Living not knowing whether the next confrontation may cost you your life.
Praying harder daily for your loved ones, husband and wife.
Wondering if your children took heed and listened to your word of wisdom.
You’re living daily on edge, full of stress and unwanted criticism.
Yeah, I live here, it’s obvious I have been deprived from day to day.
But you who are free what a price you pay!
If you educate your child you wil pay a kings fee
And that payment still don’t guarantee they won’t end up like me.
What about those seeking employment, the want, need, and desire for better jobs.
You get your pay only to find with the deductions you’ve been robbed.
Those who look, and talk like me,
those who are feared by the intellects, those who fulfill your society,
Have said lock us away and toss the key.
As I read the papers I wondered what is the new punishment to be.
Just a few words from my home this 6 x 9 concrete cell
You think you’re living better,
after reading today’s paper….I can’t tell.

I’ve often asked my self are we, the free society, prisoners of our own environments.

The Manual (1st Chapter)

From the author of Soon and Very Soon, Sherryle Kiser Jackson, comes The Manual (October 2009). Why says their isn’t a manual for love, relationships, and raising kids?

Chapter1

Deidre Collins was enjoying the click of her freshly manicured nails across the keyboard of her personal computer. She did not know what she enjoyed more about her day off, the invigorating wash, blow dry and curl at Prim Rose Beauty Salon, the luxury of having someone else do her nails or the leisure time she had to delete old e-mails and drift through cyberspace. By the third page of e-mail scams and spam, Deidre was saving time by clicking the button to select all the mail on that page and purging them unless something in the message line prompted her to open it. The top line of page four read, Finding Nympho. She wondered how the web master of this site could get away with exploiting a wholesome Disney title to sell filth. That would be all her fourteen year old son, De Andre, would need to see before his curiosity would have him viewing a lot of things she has tried as a God fearing parent to keep him from. Lord knows he was on the computer more than she cared to be. The devil is everywhere, she thought to herself as she checked the parental control options.
Just as Deidre was about to delete page four, an email caught her attention with a message bar which read, Tardy Notice from Pemberton Middle School. She had remembered thinking how progressive the school systems had gotten when they asked for e-mail and cell phone information on the parent contact form at the beginning of the year. She read the notice which was to inform her that her son, De Andre Hicks was tardy for school on March 19th. That was over a month ago. Why hadn’t they called, she thought. Then she remembered that DeAndre typically came in two hours before her. Naturally he had erased the message with no intentions on telling her. She knew her son, he wasn’t a saint. Lately his behavior wasn’t even close.
Deidre examined her e-mails more closely. She found 2 more tardy notices, March 28th and April 15th. Despite feeling angry, she couldn’t help but feeling a little guilty about not checking her messages more regularly. And when was the last time she had been to his school to check on him? She had only been to Pemberton Middle school twice since he started there last year as a seventh grader.
Deidre couldn’t understand what was stopping DeAndre from getting to school on time. After winning the battle of getting him out of bed each morning all he had to do was walk a few yards to the bus stop and get on. She purposely worked the swing shift, from 11am to 7pm, at least three times a week to make sure he was prepared for the day. Most of the time she left nothing to his imagination in regards to what she expected from him when he came in by himself in the afternoon. Head nods and barely audible grunts let Deidre know he had at least heard her to-do lists. God knows how many other notices she had deleted in her haste to empty her e-mail box.
Deidre was up before DeAndre this morning to make her nine am hair appointment and was sitting in the nail shop by 12:30. Her best girlfriend’s wedding was the next day for which she was an attendant. The latter didn’t thrill her in the way she would have been in her twenties or if she was married herself by her present age of thirty eight.
The single phone line she used for both the telephone and the computer rang the moment she logged off of the internet. It was probably Sheila asking her to pick up yet another thing she or her overpriced wedding coordinator forgot.
“Hello, I’m trying to reach Mrs. Hicks. This is Jeff Riley, the principal at Pemberton Middle School where her son, DeAndre attends.”
“This is Ms. Collins. I am DeAndre’s mother.” Deidre said. Her upper body tensed the way a person would in preparation for receiving a shot.
“Ms. Collins, DeAndre has gotten himself into trouble and I was wondering if it were possible for you to come down to the school and pick him up.”
“I don’t understand. Are you saying he’s been kicked out of school?”
“Yes mam, he will be suspended.”
“Excuse me.” Deidre yielded to a short coughing spell from the lump rising in her throat. “What did he do?”
“This is why we want you to come in. When a child has been suspended we have what is known as an exit conference where the school explains the circumstances surrounding the suspension.”
“That is what I am asking you. Why was he suspended?”
“It allows you to meet with a team that includes DeAndre’s teachers and counselor, so that there are many perspectives on how DeAndre can be more effective when he returns to school.” He continued as if he didn’t hear her question.
“And when will he be able to return, Mr. Riley?”
“The day De Andre will be permitted back to school will also be explained at the conference. Rather than upset you further on the phone, it would be best if we sit down and discuss his conduct in detail.”
“Are you telling me you’re kicking my child out of school, but cannot tell me why over the phone?”
“Calm down, Mrs. Hicks. Is transportation a problem?”
“It’s Ms. Collins, DeAndre’s father and I aren’t married. To answer your question, transportation is not a problem. Mr. Riley, I am a supportive parent and I am also a Christian. You can be assured that before I leave for the school I will be praying for an outcome that aligns with my faith. Just like you have prepared your team to be a united front when I arrive, I would like to be equally prepared.
“He’s being suspended for sexual harrasment.”
“I’ll be right there.”

Respect the Mouse

When Book Marketing gurus instruct us impressionable debut novelist to couple each and every vacation with a book marketing activity such as a book signing or author appearance I’m sure they didn’t mean a Disney Vacation-the mother of all vacation orchestration. But, I attempted it. I was invited to sign my debut novel, Soon and Very Soon in the Author’s Pavilion at my sorority convention in Orlando this past week . That gave me at least four days to hang out with Mickey, Minnie and the crew. What could go wrong, right? It is of course, The Year of a Million Dreams. I just had to unload the thirty books ( that I packed into a suitcase and passed off as my daughter’s checked bag) so my dreams would be fulfilled.

I took multi-tasking to a new level and had to make some hard choices in the process. More than anything you want everyone to have a good time on vacation. This meant ensuring that everyone had a chance to do what they wanted. Disney is for kids and my six year had whole-heartedly bought into fantasy from the time she watched the Disney vacation planning video. My husband wanted some much need down time and didn’t want to, “stuck with the kids” the whole time. I had thirty books to unload. Did I say that already?

We adapted a philosophy- Respect the Mouse. Respect the Mouse had come to mean nothing takes precedent over seeing Mickey in the faux- fur flesh. We had three Magic Your Way tickets for three days which only gave us entrance into the parks. The “Your Way” part did not mean a reprieve from the hefty admission price plus taxes and applicable fees. So, Respect the Mouse also meant you had better adjust your attitude to ensure that we all have a good time, especially at picture time.

A monsoon type rain on Day 2 throws a (no pun intended) monkey wrench in our excursion to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Oh my goodness, don’t panic…spreadsheet schedules can be altered. Call the Bibbidi Boppiti Boutique and tell the fairy godmothers to change my daughter’s hair, nails and make-up appointment to Tuesday evening. Push everything back a day. Except the author’s pavilion is Monday and Tuesday 9am-9pm. I have to cut my time off at the knees.
Now I have less time to unload thirty books. I set up my booth Monday morning and try my best to sell my sorors on the story I conceptualized over ten years ago. I am amazed how relevant it is today in the emergence of mega-ministries and public break-ups of ministry power couples. But, I’m green. I’m so new at this expo thing that I am guilty of leaving my booth several times to get into the line and take pictures of my literary idols, Victoria Christopher Murray, E. Lynn Harris and Hill Harper, not to mention Sorority superstars such as former presidents and Honorary members- all selling their own books!

Before I know it a whistle is going off like the one that told Fred it was quitting time at the quarry in Bedrock . Decision time. Do I leave the pavilion and possible sells on the table to go in search of making my family’s Disney dreams come true? I’m feeling torn and my attitude begins to shift for the worst. Then I remembered our mantra- I’ve got to respect it. I’ve got to Respect the Mouse. I tell this to myself as I watch literally hundreds of sorors flood the pavilion as my departure coincides with the ending of an important session. I repeat the mantra the next day as I pack up my 20 or so books to trek to Downtown Disney and watch the fairy godmothers transform my daughter to Princess Shanae-nae with tiara and sandy blonde extensions affixed with combs and pins. Her Cinderella costume (that we carried with us) is snatching as her 6T body wears at the 2T-4T seams, but she is cute as a button, and very much a princess.

I realize these moments are priceless. If I had of stayed behind that table at booth 841 in the Orange County Convention Center Exhibit Hall I wouldn’t have been there to hear my daughter very coyly ask Mickey’s assistant, “Is Minnie, Mickey’s friend or girlfriend?” I would have never discovered that she is braver than me and willing to ride every roller coaster with her adventurous dad. I would never have heard her proclaim she had the best time ever.
In the end we had a magical time. I captured some fantastic photos with my digital camera, and yes, the smiles are genuine. All because we respected the mouse.

Black In America

Black In America……..

Do we as Blacks really understand the essence of being black? Have we checked and rechecked our history? Have we stayed connected to both the positive and negative results of our ancestor’s struggles and plights? If we have we all and those hereafter wouldn’t give a second thought to obtaining an education, voting, or seeking to implement new laws. Welfare and other programs wouldn’t be a claim as the only way to live generation after generation. We wouldn’t accept community, education and living conditions that didn’t strive to be the best for our families. We wouldn’t accept our children sassing adults from the age of two or accept “Family Services” book terms to raise our homes and watch them as they take our children. We wouldn’t accept our children Telling us what they will or won’t do. We wouldn’t accept their criminal behavior, them ruining our homes and creating havoc in the schools. We wouldn’t accept the gang recruitment of our children. We would have a grasp on who we should be, are and want our generations to follow.

Do we as Blacks really understand the essence of being black? It brings responsibility. We will not receive the acres and the mule. The lie was told to add glamour to a trip to this country that has held us in bondage ever since the journey. The same glamour that is depicted in our videos, the bling of that acre and a mule. Our ancestors were foreigners that were used to build a nation, a nation that we need to embrace but remember we were foreigners. Foreigners can go to any country and succeed following the rules of that country. We complain about others who come to America and achieve………they learn the rules and succeed. They seek what their families can get from this loving government and succeed. They get financing, businesses, education, housing, health care and succeed. It is understood the policies that are made behind the closed doors but we as Blacks need to speak on what is afforded to those who now have the opportunities that exceed ours. But first we must follow the rules. We can’t sell drugs, loot, fail to attend community and school board meetings and expect things to just change. Millions watched CNN and complained but out of those how many parents are involved in their communities? How many attend their children’s Parent Teacher Meetings? How many know where their children are or who they’re with daily? I thank CNN for opening conversations, posing questions, recognizing there is a need for solutions. We as Blacks in America need to find solutions.

Do we as Blacks really understand the essence of being black? It brings determination. Our ancestors were survivals. They took on challenges and endured what very few claim they could live with or without. Today’s black families are scattered for various reasons. Our connection may be a result of societies pressures but really, families are not put together or torn apart because the Man influenced its makeup. Yes the economy takes two working parents and yes employment means that the educated have an advantage; but our cores in family are weak. There’s no longer “Mama” to bring the family together we they run everywhere but to church on Sunday. “Daddy” is not there to help the young men learn manhood begins when they no longer sit on the potty. Neither are there at the recitals, basketball games, or graduations. Neither is cutting of the videos, explaining sex education, spending quality time and this is not the responsibility of America. It is ours.

Do You Know Who’s Kissing You????

LETS JUST KISS AND SAY GOOD-BYE by T.D. Jakes When I thought of the lyrics of the song it made me wonder about a kiss.I had to meet you here today. There’s just so many things to say. Please don’t stop me till I’m through, this is something I hate to do. We’ve been meeting here
so long…..etc….Please darling don’t you cry, Let’s just kiss and say good-bye!
Powerful lyrics.
But why a kiss? A kiss is a term of endearment. A kiss is something that is the seal of approval. Guys always feel that getting the first kiss from a young lady was the
start of something. A kiss is usually how you greet your wife. A kiss is how you say good night to your children. A kiss is what you share when you want to let a person know that you love them!

So why did Judas betray Jesus with a kiss? This gives a whole new meaning for a kiss!
Jesus had 12 friends that we know as disciples. He chose his disciples Himself. The bible says that he knew one of them was the devil. So for 3 years of Jesus’ life he walked, talked, and had breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a man that he knew would betray Him. Some may wonder, why didn’t Jesus expose Judas for what he was? Why did Jesus allow Judas to continue on with Him?
The answer is simple. Jesus knew that prophecy had to be
fulfilled. He knew he had an ultimate purpose in life. So in order to fulfill the promise,Jesus had to let someone he didn’t necessarily care for as a person tag along to keep Himself focused on the purpose.

There are people in your life that are there only to bother you. These people are in your life to keep you on your knees. These people are in your life because they are a
part of the problem and the solution. These same people will help catapult you to your destiny! When Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss, he opened our eyes to the fact
that a kiss is not always what we intend it to be.
Be careful who you let put their lips on you and your life. Be careful of who speaks well of you. Be careful of who always has an answer. Be careful of the ones that seem to
like you but it’s just something about them that you just can’t put your finger on.

Everyone in your life is not meant to stay in your life. Let’s just kiss and say good bye. You can’t carry everyone with you. There are some places that God wants you to go
that only you can go. Learn to love, leave, and live your life as God intended!
The next time you’re betrayed by someone you THOUGHT was a friend, just remember ‘Let’s Just Kiss and Say Good Bye! Jesus already knew the betrayal was on the way.
So get over it, step on it, and don’t live your life wondering ‘why’

I was sent this message and decided to ask you……

DO YOU KNOW WHO’S KISSING YOU???

BE BLESSED, BE ENCOURAGED

MINISTERIAL SEDUCTION

There are times when I am amazed of how a woman will allow herself to be so engulfed in a man to a point she does not consider the logic behind it. There is a drawing force that automatically draws a woman to a man. It gets a hold of her and takes her to another world. Some people say it was activated in the Garden of Eden when the woman became disobedient to the command of God. This hypnotic drawing force is often times misinterpreted as falling in love by some women. In reality, it is seduction – a means for a fall.

How does something like this happen? It happens very easily. Women become very susceptible to seduction in moments of loneliness, unhappiness and at times during stages of low self-esteem. The problem with this is the loss of power experienced once the seduction is successful. This usually means not an increase of love but a lack of love from the seducer. Their reason for the seduction is usually for self-gain. Women are the last to know as they find fulfillment in the connection to the man that has chosen her above other women.

Do you know men of God have this same seductive influence over women? Trust me, many of them know it too. They have a special way of making women feel they are so needed to carry out God’s work. I’ve seen it several times where the woman in the church who motivates the pastor is usually not the wife. It is this same woman who is faithful and appears for every service and event. She makes sure she has an active role in the church to ensure the pastor has what he needs to be a success.

I remember catching a sample of a minister’s arrogance and certainty I was a likely candidate for this special role. The minister would give me direct eye contact and a look that reassured me my presence was much needed. Eventually, that look convinced me he needed me in his church on a regular basis. I was convinced I had a divine purpose and I must follow him wherever he goes. Nobody could tell me the Pastor didn’t need me to be a great minister, so I kept coming back and waiting for that eye contact every Sunday.

One day, I sat in a different place in the church and noticed my pastor giving a woman that same eye contact he gave me. This woman was just as confident and proud as I was about being needed by our pastor. At that point, I began to observe from a distance this minister’s interactions with women. Every last one of them was mesmerized by his mere presence. He knew how to make each one feel very special without physically going past holy boundaries. A hug or a hand shake did the trick; but nothing could beat that eye contact.

The confirmation that this wasn’t just something in my mind came when I was becoming a regular and he started telling the other women to include me in special projects. They didn’t take it too well and did just enough not to flunk the “Christian way of handling one another” test, while turning their noses up at me. I had to laugh inside as I observed how the minister knew just how to seduce women without sexual activity. For sure, to take possession of a soul, you must take possession of the mind. Trust me when I say the most powerful bond between a male and female is not sexual, but the joining of the minds. However, seduction has a unique and sadistically magical affect on the mind. It causes a woman to sacrifice herself for someone else without a just reward.

Ministers have many women who are connected to them by hypnosis. They absorb every single word he says and allow it to fill the empty places in their lives. Who wouldn’t want to be close to a preacher, a man of God? The enticement takes place in being determined to do the right thing — keeping the man of God happy! Though some fail and become sexually involved, most don’t because their fulfillment is in knowing she is special to the pastor. Women give large sums of money to have that adrenaline rush. Some go so far as to give up their husbands. Women love their pastors because it is a safe love requiring only one thing: him needing “us” to do God’s work.

Don’t believe me? Look a woman straight in the eye and ask her, “How much do you love your pastor?”

Excerpt: Sherri Lewis’s Dance Into Destiny

by Sherri L. Lewis

Chapter One

“Quite honestly, Ms. Banks, if you’re not able to bring all your course grades up to a B average by the end of the semester, I’m afraid you’re going to have to withdraw from the Master’s program.”

Keeva Banks stared at her counselor, watching her cheap, red lipstick bleed into the little wrinkles around her lips. It was almost as if she was mesmerized by the words coming out of her mouth.

She wasn’t.

She knew this was coming. It was just a matter of when. Even still, hearing it out loud…

Keeva grabbed a lock of hair and twisted it around her finger.

Ms. Parker pulled a green file folder from her desk with Keeva’s name printed on the corner and began flipping through the papers in it. “I’ve received progress reports from each of your professors and I have to tell you, things don’t look good.” Ms. Parker’s voice faded into a droning tone like the adult characters on a Charlie Brown cartoon. “Waa wa wa wa…”

Keeva fastened her eyes on Ms. Parker’s clothes. She had to focus on something – anything – other than her impending doom to make it through this meeting without falling apart.

Her blouse was made of some cheapy, chintzy fabric with wide, horizontal brown and beige stripes. How could she have thought it matched the completely different shade of brown of her shapeless skirt? And didn’t she know someone with her figure, or lack thereof, should never wear horizontal stripes? Not to mention that her skin was too sallow to wear brown anyway.

Keeva looked at her own tailored Donna Karan pantsuit. The rich, burgundy color accented her cocoa brown skin perfectly. She had dressed carefully that morning, knowing she’d need to look good in light of the news she was about to receive.

She made her eyes go back to Ms. Parker’s face, not wanting to appear rude.

“From what I understand, so far this semester you’ve made, at best, C’s on your exams and you still haven’t completed the project for your Research Methods class.”

Ms. Parker paused as if waiting for Keeva to speak.

No way she could answer without her voice shaking. Or worse still, her bursting into tears. She nodded slowly, hoping that would be a sufficient response.

Ms. Parker’s closet of an office seemed to be shrinking. And did they have the heat turned up in this part of the building? Keeva pressed her hand down on her knee to stop her leg from bouncing. She rubbed her sweaty palms on her pantsuit.

“I have to ask, Ms. Banks, do you really want this degree?”

Keeva almost laughed. What difference did it make what she wanted?

She sat up straight and pasted on a camera-pleasing smile. “Of course I want this degree. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.” She hoped she sounded more convincing than she felt.

For the first time, and only for a minute, she thought about it. Did she want a master’s in Professional Counseling?

How could she help anyone when she didn’t have the answers? Keeva imagined herself counseling people, passing them tissue when they cried, patting their arms and giving them understanding looks in that annoying, empathetic way; bandaging them up to send them back into life to be bruised all over again. What was the point?

Would she ever really change anyone’s life?

Ms. Parker stood, came around to the front of her desk and leaned against it.

Keeva watched her hips spread out wide across the wooden edge. She sat back a little. Oh dear. Here comes the heart to heart.

“Ms. Banks, is there something going on that you need to talk about? A problem affecting your academic performance?”

Keeva mustered her last bit of emotional stability to paste on another smile. “No, Ms. Parker. There’s nothing going on. Thank you for your concern, though.”

And that was the worst part about it. There was nothing she could blame this on. She was healthy, all her needs were met; she had supportive parents, plenty of friends and a wonderful boyfriend.

Her life was…perfect.

All she had to do was get this stupid degree, start her career, get married, have 2.5 children, buy a Volvo and a home in an exclusive neighborhood and live out the rest of her years in Utopian suburbia.

What more could she ask?

She reached down to pick up her Coach briefcase and stood. She had to get out of the office before she erupted. “I really appreciate you taking the time to speak with me.”

That much was true. The last graduate program she flunked out of just sent a “warning” letter in the mail. It pretty much said get it together or else. Else had landed her here at Georgia State University.

Keeva flipped her hair over her shoulder and smoothed out her suit. “I assure you I’ll do everything I can to pull it together. Things will be better by the end of the semester.”

At least I hope.

***

Midtown Atlanta was a blur as Keeva drove to her apartment building. She couldn’t wait to get upstairs to the haven she had created for herself. She loved her one-bedroom loft. The airy openness of it gave her room to breathe. The large floor-to-ceiling windows let in abundant sunlight that kept her numerous plants flourishing. The designer yellow paint gave the room a happy feeling and was further brightened by the red, leather couch. Her place had an interior design magazine, art-deco feel to it.

Keeva winced as she imagined losing her apartment. She’d been there since her senior year at Spelman College. She and her boyfriend, Mark, then a senior at Morehouse, had picked it out together for her. If she flunked out again, her parents would withdraw their financial support and her penthouse loft, luxury car, and generous allowance would all be gone. There was no way her dad would call in another favor to get her into another graduate program.

Keeva dropped her briefcase off at the dining room table, ignoring the books there, begging to be read. She had to study, but needed to get rid of the heaviness that had been riding her since she stepped into Ms. Parker’s office.

Keeva went straight to her bedroom and peeled off her pantsuit. She put on some comfortable leggings and a T-shirt, and walked barefoot into the living room. She pushed the furniture towards the kitchen, careful not to scratch her hardwood floors. They had been a must when she was looking for an apartment. Even though she had given up hope of a professional dancing career, she still loved to dance.

She flicked on the stereo and pushed the “skip disc” button until she got to her African drumming CD. The pulsing tribal rhythms connected with something deep within her and began to restore the energy the day had drained.

Keeva inhaled slowly, breathing the music into her body. She began to sway back and forth until the music got into her feet, her body, and her soul. She moved around the room, slowly at first. Her movements grew bigger and stronger as she allowed herself to become enraptured in the music. As she leaped and twirled and kicked, the tension streamed out of every pore of her body. She danced herself into a frenzy until she reached a climatic point of release, and then lay in the middle of the floor.

She missed dancing.

Her mother enrolled her in her first dance class at the age of six so she could develop grace and good posture. Her father took her to see the Alvin Ailey dance troupe when she was ten. After that, all she dreamed of was being a professional dancer. She planned to audition for the troupe when she was seventeen, but her mother refused. Neither of her parents thought a dance career was appropriate for Keeva. They thought she needed a professional career to support herself, and that she could dance in her spare time, as a hobby. After they canceled her audition, dancing became bittersweet for Keeva and she quit taking classes.

Keeva jumped when the phone rang. She stretched back out and stared at the ceiling. The hardwood floor felt cold against her hot, sweaty skin.

The answering machine beeped. “Keeva, this is Shara Anderson from your Foundations class. I know you’re probably bogged down with studying for your other classes, but we need to get this project started soon. Please give me a call when you get a chance so we can set up a time to meet.”

Keeva rolled her eyes. In the midst of her midterm exams, her stupid professor assigned a research project. He randomly grouped the class into teams of two and she ended up with Shara.

Why was she calling her now? The project wasn’t due until the end of the semester.

Keeva didn’t know Shara too well. The most notable thing about her was how plain Jane she was. Her hair was always pulled back in a ponytail and she wore no earrings, no makeup, no nothing. She had a pretty face and would probably be nice looking if she fixed herself up a little. If she didn’t wear jeans everyday, Keeva would think she was one of those fanatical religious people who thought it was a sin to wear pants or look good. Like God would send someone to hell over a tube of lipstick and a pair of earrings. Shara definitely wasn’t the kind of person Keeva associated with and she wasn’t looking forward to the project.

She looked over at the clock. Mark would be dropping by in less than an hour to check on her. Keeva pulled the furniture back into place, then grabbed a quick shower. As she put on her make-up, she had to laugh at her new hair color. By some strange reasoning, probably a television commercial she had seen, she thought all she needed to fix her life was to spice up her hair color. She pulled her thick, brown hair, now with auburn highlights, up on top of her head and fastened it with a tortoise-shell clip. Mark liked her hair up.

As she poured a generous glass of wine, the buzzer rang, indicating that Mark was downstairs. A few minutes later, she heard him fumbling with his keys and went to open the door.

He pulled her into his arms. “Hey, how’s my Princess?”

Somehow Mark had adopted her father’s nickname for her. It was really a private joke between she and her dad. When she was growing up, he always thought Keeva’s mother was too hard on her and wanted her to be perfect, like a little princess. He thought she should get to enjoy herself more and not worry about what fork to use or how to enunciate perfect English.

Keeva inhaled the strong, masculine scent of Mark’s cologne and snuggled into his chest. “Fine, now. Do you want to come in or are we going to stand in the doorway all night?”

He kissed her on the nose. “You look beautiful as always. I love your hair like that.”

She beamed at his compliment.

Mark took her glass so she could twist the lock on the door he could never seem to work. He took a sip and frowned. “Wine? I thought you were studying.”

“I’m through for the evening. I was relaxing until you got here.”

“You know I don’t like it when you drink wine. How many times do I have to tell you that?”

Keeva clenched her teeth and turned to walk toward the couch.

He followed her. “All you had to do was wait until I got here. I know how to relax you.”

She rolled her eyes. Oh, no – not tonight. She searched her mind for excuses but couldn’t think of anything. She took a deep breath and turned towards him, making herself smile. Demurely, she asked, “Really? How?”

“Come here, I’ll show you.”

Mark kissed her for what seemed like an hour. She knew him well enough to know what was next and wished she hadn’t said she was finished studying. She slowly pulled herself away. She dodged his searching lips every time he tried to reengage her in another kiss until he finally gave a frustrated groan and said, “What?”

She lowered her eyes. She couldn’t look in his face and lie. “I’m sorry, baby. It’s that time of the month.”

“Again? Wasn’t that two weeks ago?” He was paying more attention to when her cycles were, probably because she was using that excuse more and more.

Truth was, she’d barely had a period since she started getting Depo-Provera shots over a year ago. “You know that Depo has my cycles all crazy.” She turned her back to him.

He rubbed her shoulders. “You know I hate that stuff. It’s unnatural – all those extra hormones in your body. That’s probably the reason for the extra pounds you’ve gained and your constant moodiness.”

She whipped around. “What?”

“Don’t get upset. I’ve noticed you’ve picked up a few pounds. And you’re always in a bad mood. I know school is difficult, baby, but you can’t just let yourself go.”

Keeva took a deep breath and pulled a strand of hair. “Mark, I’m really tired and I need to get some rest. I have to get up and study early in the morning. Thanks for coming by, but –”

He tried to smooth things over with a kiss. She stood there limp.

“Mark, I have a study group in the morning. I need to go to sleep.” It wasn’t exactly a lie. She did eventually have to set up a study date with Shara.

“You don’t have to be so sensitive. I wasn’t trying to hurt your feelings. I’m sorry, Princess.” He slunk to the door like a sad puppy with his tail between his legs.

She walked over to kiss him. “I’m sorry. I’m just tired from all the studying. I’ll feel better after a good night’s rest. I’ll call you in the morning, okay? I promise we’ll spend some quality time together after midterms are over.”

Mark accepted her apology with a kiss on the forehead. “All right, we’ll make it a date.”

Keeva closed the door behind him. She went to her dining table and flipped open a textbook. She had to make herself read at least two chapters before she went to bed. For the past few weeks, whenever she tried to study, she somehow ended up on the couch watching television. Lifetime always had a good movie on, one after another.

Later, as she undressed to get into bed, she stood in her full-length mirror and turned from side to side, trying to find the extra pounds Mark mentioned. She studied her twenty-five year old body, but didn’t see any difference.

She pulled her favorite pair of jeans out of the closet. They were a size four and usually fit her perfectly. She pulled up the zipper. They fit the same way they always did. Mark probably noticed something she didn’t. Gotta start going to the gym.

Keeva sat on the edge of the bed and opened her nightstand drawer to pull out a bottle of Ambien tablets. She didn’t like having to depend on pills, but she had to get a good night’s sleep. If she did her usual tossing and turning for hours, she’d never be able to study tomorrow.

She slipped between her crème-colored, satin sheets and started her deep breathing and relaxation techniques, hoping for sleep to come. The pill would soon chase away images of her flunking out of school and losing everything she held dear. (Urban Christian, $14.95, 300pp)

Deltareviewer, Reviewing for Real Page Turners

SHADOW LIVING: Paintings of Grief by Deborah Slappey Pitts is a vivid description of what it really means to lose a loved one. Clyde Slappey was stricken with primary amyloidosis, a disease of the immune system, and when he was first diagnosed, after months of seeing doctor after doctor, there seemed to be no cure. Clyde and Deborah had been married for twenty-one years when the disease finally took him from her. Even though he was at the Mayo Clinic waiting for a heart transplant, death came to him sooner. This book is Deborah’s story of living with the grief of having lost her soul mate. She gives the seven stages of grief: shock, denial, anger, fear, bargaining, depression and acknowledgement.

Her anger was interesting in that she was so angry with Clyde for leaving her and his two sons, Clyde Daryl and Alex Keith. In her deep grief, she felt as if he could have held on longer – at least long enough to get a heart transplant. SHADOW LIVING is a book that would surely help anyone going through the loss of a dearly loved mate. Deborah tells of her sleepless nights, her attempts to hide her deep depression from her friends and loved ones, of finally seeking help for herself and her son, Alex Keith. Her words are emotional and deep and I felt as if I, too, had known Clyde and had witnessed him as a father and husband.
Alice Holman, The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers

Shadow Living: Paintings of Grief by Deborah Slappey Pitts is an honest, inside view of a woman and a family’s struggle to get through to the other side when one loses a loved one. Ms. Pitts is harrowingly honest in her portrayal of how she felt when her husband died. The reader could literally feel the emotions and the pain. More importantly, however, the reader could also feel the hope. ….Shadow Living serves as an honest and spiritual guide to those who are going through or will go through the loss of a beloved family member. I recommend this book to all who have loved and lost someone dear to their heart.
